The Garage has been a special place in La Santa since the 2000s. Firstly, because it was built over the years by my father, who was self-taught and devoted his free time every Sunday to make the place special. He somehow managed to balance his full-time job with building the space.
As soon as I discovered surfing, it became my passion, and I started to spend more and more time in the Garage. At first, only weekends, then entire summers, and eventually, I made the place my home. I must say that all my friends ended up coming around to the Garage during that time— it became the meeting point for young people in the village. We surfed, took photos, played music, threw parties… Over the years, the space had many different uses. From a surf school, a gym, a music studio, to simply a storage space where the family would keep all the junk they no longer wanted.
When I started travelling and studying, the Garage became somewhat neglected. I began spending more time designing and working on music and advertising, and less time surfing and being in nature. However, as time went by, as I grew older and wiser, and especially after the pandemic, there was a turning point for me. I suddenly felt an urge to go back to the island and connect to what really made me feel alive.
So, that’s when I decided to renovate the Garage and give it a whole new look. I put everything I learned into practice, from over 10 years away from the island working in creative design. At the beginning of 2021, together with a crew of family builders which included my father, we started the renovation and finished in November that year. The place then went from “Adri’s garage” to Garage La Santa.
The Garage is still my home when I visit the island. It’s a place where I can be close to what matters to me the most— surfing, having my friends around for dinner, going on bike rides. Not only that, but it’s also somewhere I can do my work just as I would in the studio. However, if I’m honest, when I’m on the island, I prefer to work on my computer as little as possible, making as much time as I can to go surfing in La Santa or El Quemao in between working hours.
My goal is to share this way of living and experiencing Lanzarote with others. When I’m not on the island, the Garage can be rented by night or by season.
